EXHIBITION OF 5 ARTIST FROM KARLOVY VARY
In the COAL Gallery Carlsbad California
The town of Karlovy Vary Město Karlovy Vary holds a leading and interesting position in the Karlovy Vary region not only for its spa character. In the 19th century it became an artistic centre to which artists – musicians, poets, writers and sculptors arrived not only from the Czech lands but also from all over Europe. The situation was the same in the 20th century and in the present century as well. Moreover, local artists also worked in Karlovy Vary and they made the town famous in the artistic world. The authors who bring greetings through their works to the partner town Carlsbad indisputably belong to them.
A female painter Varvara Divišová (1954) and a painter Jan Samec (1955) are a sister and a brother. Their father Jan Samec srov. (1917 – 1988), an important artist in Karlovy Vary gave them not only a great creative background but mainly he aroused love to the nature and landscape in them. They both used this gift as well as they could: Varvara shows the nature in basic time changes of the year and particularly as a space welcoming our perception and feelings – we like to consider themselves identical with water surface, canopy of the heavens, a field but also with an ordinary fence at a small house which we can find in her pictures where we consider their elaborated colourful dynamics as well.
Her brother Jan moved the interpretation of landscape to the field of philosophical debates. He does not paint concrete the landscape in which he finds. On the canvas he masterfully captures a traditional variable cycle of the nature – difficult concurrence of processes of the birth, bloom and death. However, all this is headed by the order of existence! He sees such placing in depiction of a square, a clear geometrical shape which brings system and logic to his paintings.
The creativity of Lenka Sárová Malíská (1981) permanently surprises. She deals with original design of porcelain – drinking sets, porcelain jewellery, spa cups typical for drinking healing springs. Her painting full of beautiful and gentle colourful traces is also distinquished among all her activities. In the author´s pictures we can find figurative and also landscape subjects whose basis is a poetic paraphrase of the world around us.
A photographer Stanislav Kožený (1948) has admired landscape for ages. He has captured its uniqueness in black and white and colourful photographs for many times. In recent years he has dealt with a change of the Czech landscape whose integral part has been a technical machinery.Possibilities of computer processing of this photo documentation offered him its art transformation – the author´s talent was developed impressively in photographic composition of enlarged details of agricultural machines and their colourful transforming.
Zdeněk Halámek (1943) is the author of impressive black and white and colourful publications on Karlovy Vary. He introduced himself as a sensitive photograph of town scenery, especially Karlovy Vary historical architecture and parks in believable or romantic interpretation. Now he specializes in work with more than a hundred – year- old wooden camera. He exposes long single shots of artificially made compositions in which the subject sinks into the darkness to appear finally in the light. He changes the shots into contact black and white photo of the size of 9 x12 cm. He makes these works in honour of Josef Sudek, a great photographer of the 20th century.

THE EXHIBITION OF ARTIST FROM OUR PARTNER TOWN OF CARLSBAD
The Municipal Gallery of Karlovy Vary has prepared this exhibition in the rooms of the Castle Tower, where the artists from our sister city Carlsbad from California present their works on this show, they are members of their city art association which is called Carlsbad Oceanside Art Leage. The exhibition is a continuation of mutual cooperation which our Gallery started in 2015, when we organized exhibition of five Californian artists in the gallery Na ochozu (On the Gallery) in the Hot Spring Colonnade. In the following year we presented in turn works of five artists from Karlovy Vary in the Gallery of Oceanside Art Leage in Carlsbad.
At the current exhibition we get acquainted with works of three painters and one photographer from their Art League.
RITA SHULAK studied at several universities and at the Athens School of Art, as well as privately by various artists. In the years 2007 – 2013 she won first place in several art competitions. She dedicates not only to painting, but also to illustrations – she publishes them in various magazines. Rita uses different techniques for painting – acrylic, oil, painting with fingers, spatula or dry brush. At the show we see five of her canvases.
The second exhibitor is JANET LEE.She exhibits two drawings with colorful crayons and then three of her black and white graphics. Janet Lee studied visual communication at the University of Birmingham and then she went on to the Department of Graphics at the State University of San Diego. The main and the most popular medium of her work is engraving and etching with aquatint.
As the last painter I introduce you RUTH PARKER. Two of her watercolors are exposed here on the ground floor and the other three will be seen on the first floor. Ruth Parker became interested in art in adulthood in the 1970s. She enrolled in the painting course for adults, where she first formed acrylic and oil. Only later she discovered the watercolor that enchanted her so much that she remained faithful to him till today.
The author of the photos located on the ground floor is ALAN HAYNES. The series you can see here is called "Abandoned and Forgotten". Alan Haynes shot them in various deserted places, in places that once flourished and where vibrated life. With the series of photographs the author would like to excite the audience with emotion and interest. What were these places in their times of prosperity? Who were the people who lived here? Why did these places succumb to ruin after time?
I believe that your interest attracts not only the questions asked by the photographer, but that you will also be interested in other exhibited works.
